Bundle subscriptions

Sell a static or dynamic bundle as a subscription, with its own discount and delivery frequencies or one of your existing plans.

A bundle subscription lets customers subscribe to a bundle instead of buying it once. Each product in the bundle becomes a line on the subscription, and the subscription discount applies on every order.

Bundle subscriptions are marked Beta and are on the Accelerate and Enterprise plans. On other plans, the bundle's Subscriptions card says Available on a higher plan. A dynamic bundle also needs dynamic bundles, which are on the Enterprise plan. See Choose a Subrise plan.

Turn on subscriptions for a bundle

  1. Go to Bundles and open a saved bundle.
  2. In the Subscriptions card, check Offer subscriptions for this bundle.
  3. Under Subscription plan, choose one:
    • Custom plan for this bundle: Subrise creates and manages a plan with the discount and frequencies you set here.
    • Use one of your plans: the bundle's products go on one of your existing plans. Choose it in Plan group.
  4. For a custom plan, set the Subscription discount and the Delivery frequencies. See below.
  5. Click Save in the save bar.

The bundle list then shows a Subscribable badge, or the number of active subscriptions.

Custom plan settings

  • Subscription discount: a whole percentage. It applies to every order, including renewals.
  • Delivery frequencies: for each one, set Every (1 to 52) and the Interval: Weeks, Months or Years. Click Add frequency for more, up to 10. Customers choose one when they subscribe.

Subrise names the custom plan "Subrise Bundle: " followed by the bundle's name. You manage it from the bundle. It doesn't appear under Plans.

Using one of your plans

With Use one of your plans, Subrise only accepts a plan group that meets all of these. Otherwise saving shows an error that names the problem.

  • Every plan in the group has the same percentage discount, or none of them has a discount. Fixed-amount or set-price discounts, a Different discount after a number of charges, and different percentages on different plans aren't supported.
  • Every plan bills every so many weeks, months or years.
  • The group has 50 plans or fewer.
  • The group isn't another bundle's custom plan.

How the discount works

The subscription discount replaces the bundle's one-time discount. The two never stack.

If the subscription discount is lower than the one-time discount, Subrise warns you with Subscribing costs more than buying once. Customers usually expect the subscription to be the better deal.

A dynamic bundle's volume discounts apply to one-time purchases only. Subscribers get the flat subscription discount on every order.

Products that can't be subscribed to, such as gift cards, are left out of the subscription automatically. If a required step of a dynamic bundle has only such products, Subrise shows Customers can't subscribe to this bundle yet and the storefront hides the subscribe option until you fix it.

With free shipping on the bundle, renewals ship free too.

What customers see

On the bundle's product page or bundle page, customers get a choice between buying once and Subscribe, with the saving shown, such as "Subscribe & save 10%". With more than one frequency, they pick one.

The subscribe option shows in the Product Bundle and Full Page Bundle blocks. See Show bundles on your storefront.

In the customer portal, two settings under Settings > Customer portal, in the Bundles group, decide what subscribers can change:

  • Only allow bundle products: customers can only add products that belong to the bundle.
  • Keep bundles together: customers can't remove single products from a bundle subscription. If you turn this off, removing a product takes the bundle discount off that subscription. Customers can cancel either way.

Create a bundle subscription for a customer

For a static bundle, you can start a subscription on a customer's behalf.

  1. Open the bundle and, in the Subscriptions card, click Create for customer.
  2. In Add bundle subscription, search for the Customer.
  3. Choose a saved Payment method and a Delivery frequency.
  4. Click Create subscription. Subrise creates it and shows a View subscription link.

The customer isn't charged today, and no order is created. The first charge is one delivery interval from today, for example a month from now on a monthly frequency. The customer needs a saved payment method from an earlier checkout. Without one, the dialog says they need to complete a checkout first.

You can also create one from Subscriptions. See Managing subscriptions.

Turn subscriptions off

Uncheck Offer subscriptions for this bundle and save. This stops new subscriptions only. Existing subscriptions on the bundle keep billing until you cancel them one by one from Subscriptions.

Deleting the bundle works the same way: its subscriptions keep billing as normal subscriptions.
