How plans work at checkout
What customers see when they subscribe, what Shopify charges at checkout, and how Subrise handles every order after the first.
Customers subscribe through Shopify's own checkout. Shopify takes the first payment and saves the payment method. Subrise charges every renewal after that.
What the customer sees
- On the product page, the customer chooses the subscription card in the widget and picks an option.
- In the cart and at checkout, the line shows the Option name and the subscription price.
- At checkout, Shopify shows that the purchase is a recurring charge and saves the payment method for later charges.
The discount from the option shows as a lower line price, not as a separate discount code.
What happens at checkout
What Shopify charges at checkout depends on the option's selling method:

Once checkout completes, the subscription appears under Subscriptions in Subrise.
Renewals
Subrise charges each renewal on the subscription's next billing date. When the charge succeeds, Shopify creates the order and you fulfill it like any other.
You set the time of day renewals run, and how failed payments are retried, under Settings > Billing. See Billing and failed payments.
With a billing and delivery anchor, the first order still happens at checkout. Every renewal after it falls on the anchor day. See Billing and delivery anchors.
Payment providers
Shopify decides which payment providers can take subscriptions. They must be able to save a payment method and charge it later. Shopify Payments supports subscriptions. Check Shopify's help center for the current list before you launch.
Discount codes
Shopify discount codes apply to subscriptions only when the code is set to apply to subscriptions in Shopify's discount settings. The option's own discount applies either way.
