Install Subrise

Install Subrise from the Shopify App Store and finish the setup wizard that opens the first time you use it.

You install Subrise from the Shopify App Store. The first time you open it, a short setup wizard creates your first plan and helps you add Subrise to your theme.

Install the app

  1. Open the Subrise Subscriptions listing (opens in a new tab) on the Shopify App Store.
  2. Click Install and choose your store.
  3. Review the permissions Subrise asks for, then approve the install.

Shopify opens Subrise inside your admin. While Subrise prepares your store, you see Setting up your store… for a few seconds. Subrise creates your default settings and email templates, starts your free trial and begins syncing your products.

Note

Your free trial starts when you install. You don't choose a Subrise plan until later. See Choose a Subrise plan.

Finish the setup wizard

The wizard opens on the Welcome to Subrise page. A bar at the top shows which step you're on and what comes next.

Step 1: How are you starting?

Pick one:

  • I'm starting fresh: you're new to subscriptions.
  • I'm switching from another app: you already sell subscriptions with another app. Choose it from the list.

If you're switching, the Subrise team moves your subscribers for you. The wizard offers Contact our team. You can click Set up a plan meanwhile to keep going. See Migrate with our team.

Prefer help? Click Contact our team and the Subrise team sets up your store with you.

Step 2: Create your first plan

The wizard creates one plan that charges and delivers on the same schedule.

  1. Enter a Plan name. Customers see this name at checkout.
  2. Enter a Group name. Subrise uses it to group your plans.
  3. Choose a Frequency: Every week, Every month or Every year.
  4. Optional: check Offer a discount on this subscription, then set the Discount amount and Discount type (Percentage off, Amount off or Set price to).
  5. Click Create plan.

You add products to the plan later, from Products. Subrise is still syncing your products at this point. You can change anything about the plan afterwards. See Edit a plan.

Step 3: Add Subrise to your theme

This step adds two blocks to your live theme. Each has a Not installed or Installed badge.

  • Customer portal: where customers manage their subscriptions. Click Open theme editor, open the page template where the portal should go (or create one), add the Subrise Customer Portal block, then save.
  • Product widget: the subscription options on your product pages. Click Open theme editor. The Subrise Product Page Widget block is already added to your product template. Move it where the options should show, usually near Add to cart, then save.

The theme editor opens in a new tab. When you're done, come back and click I've added the customer portal or I've added the product widget. Subrise checks your theme and updates the badge.

You can skip this step and do it later. See Add the product widget and Customer experience.

Step 4: Set your sender email

Enter the Sender email. It appears as the sender on emails Subrise sends your customers once its domain is verified. Until then, emails come from info@subrise.app. It's optional, and you can change it later. See Send from your own domain.

Click Finish setup. Subrise opens Settings > Notifications, where you can review your customer emails.

Skip the wizard

Click Skip setup at the top of the page to leave the wizard. Subrise opens Create plan, and the wizard doesn't show again.

Pick up where you left off

Until you finish setting up, the Dashboard shows a Setup guide card with five tasks:

  1. Create a subscription plan
  2. Add products to a plan
  3. Add the subscription widget to your theme
  4. Add the customer portal to your theme
  5. Customize email notifications

Each task has a button that takes you to the right place. The widget button opens your theme editor with the widget already added: click Save there. The portal button opens your theme editor: open your portal page, add the Customer Portal block and click Save. Subrise ticks the first four tasks for you: the plan tasks once a plan exists and has products, and the theme tasks once their block is on your live theme. Tick Customize email notifications yourself. Click Hide guide to remove the card.

Next: work through the Launch checklist.
