Storefront customer portal
Add the Subrise customer portal to a page on your store, style it in the theme editor, and see what customers can do there.
The storefront customer portal is a page on your online store where customers manage their subscriptions. You add it with the Subrise Customer Portal block, so it uses your theme's header, footer and fonts.
If your store uses Shopify's new customer accounts, you can use Shopify customer accounts instead. You choose one or the other under Settings > Customer portal > Portal location.
Add the portal to your store
You need a page for the portal, and the portal block on that page.
1. Create a page
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Pages and click Add page.
- Give the page a title, for example "Manage subscriptions", and save it.
Tip
If the page uses your theme's default page template, the portal shows on every page that shares that template. To keep the portal on one page, create a separate template for it in the theme editor (open the Template menu and choose Create template) and assign the page to it.
2. Point Subrise at the page
- In Subrise, go to Settings > Customer portal.
- Under Portal location, choose A page on your storefront.
- In Page, choose the page you created.
- Click Save.
3. Add the portal block
- On the same settings card, click Open page in theme editor. The theme editor opens on your page.
- Click Add section, open the Apps tab and choose Customer Portal.
- Hide or remove the page's own content section if you don't want its text above the portal.
- Click Save in the theme editor.
- Back in Subrise, click Detect. Subrise checks your published theme and confirms This page has the portal block.
You can also start from Settings > Installation. Its Open the theme editor for the portal button opens the theme editor, where you open your portal page and add the block.
Add a link to the portal
Customers need a way to find the page. Add it to your store's navigation in Online Store > Navigation, or add the Subrise Account Management Button block to your account page or any other page. The button's text defaults to "Manage Subscriptions" and you can change its link, colors, border and alignment.
The button's Button Link defaults to /pages/customer-subscriptions. Unless your portal page has that handle, set Button Link to your portal page's address, for example /pages/manage-subscriptions. Otherwise the button leads to a page that doesn't exist.
Style the portal
Select the Customer Portal section in the theme editor to change how it looks. The settings are grouped like this:
| Group | What you can change |
|---|---|
| Global Settings | Primary and secondary background colors. |
| Font Settings | Header color and size, modal header size, text color and size. |
| Foreground Settings | Primary and secondary foreground colors and their text colors, and how round buttons are. |
| Card Settings | Card border color, roundness and width, and the card shadow. |
| Subscription Card Settings | The colors for paused, cancelled and active subscriptions, a gradient option, and the card header size. |
To change the words the portal uses, see Portal text.
How customers get in
Customers reach the portal in two ways:
- Signed in to your store. They see all of their subscriptions.
- From a link in a Subrise email. Emailed links open the portal on that one subscription without signing in.
If someone opens the portal page without signing in and without an emailed link, they're sent to your store's login page first.
The admin also shows each subscription's Customer portal link on the subscription page, with a copy button, so you can send it to a customer yourself.
Warning
An emailed portal link lets whoever has it manage that subscription. Only send it to the customer it belongs to.
What customers can do
Customers see a card for each subscription with its products, next order and status. Manage Subscription opens the full subscription, and Subscription History shows past orders.
From there, depending on your portal settings, customers can:
- Reschedule or skip the next order from Manage Charges. They can only pick dates you allow.
- Pause the subscription: until they resume it, for a set number of billing cycles, or after a number of upcoming orders (a scheduled pause) with an optional automatic resume.
- Resume a paused subscription, or Reactivate a cancelled one.
- Cancel with Cancel Subscription, choosing a reason if you've set reasons up. Stores set up earlier may still show Unsubscribe; change it under Portal text.
- Change plan, for example to a different delivery frequency.
- Add products as recurring items, or add one-time add-ons to the next order.
- Change quantities, swap variants and remove products. The last product on a subscription can't be removed.
- Edit the shipping address.
- Manage billing info, which opens Shopify's page for updating it.
- Change the payment method to another saved card, or ask for a link to add a new one.
Customers can also turn on Show inactive subscriptions to see cancelled and expired ones, if you allow it.
Troubleshooting
Subrise says "The portal block is not on your theme yet." Add the Customer Portal section to the page, save the theme, then click Detect again. Subrise checks your published theme, so the block must be on the live theme, not only on a draft.
Customers land on the login page. That's expected when they aren't signed in and didn't come from an emailed link.
Links in emails go to the wrong place. Check Settings > Customer portal > Portal location, and the Customers go to link under it.
