Email notifications
Turn Subrise's customer emails on or off, edit their text and design, send from your own domain, and get emails about subscription changes.
Subrise emails your customers when something happens to their subscription, such as a new subscription, an upcoming order or a failed payment. You decide which emails go out, what they say and how they look.
Open email settings from Settings > Notifications. The page has four tabs: Customer emails, Email design, Email history and Admin notifications.
Customer emails
The Customer emails tab lists every email Subrise can send. Every email starts turned on.
| Sent when | |
|---|---|
| New subscription | A new subscription is created for a customer. |
| Upcoming subscription order | A set number of days before the next order (7 by default). |
| Next order date changed | The next order date changes. |
| Subscription resumed | A paused or cancelled subscription is resumed. |
| Subscription paused | A subscription is paused. |
| Add-on removed | Pausing or reactivating a subscription removes one-time add-ons that hadn't shipped. |
| Subscription cancelled | A subscription is cancelled. |
| Failed billing attempt | A renewal charge fails. |
| New gift subscription | Someone buys a gift subscription (sent to the buyer). |
| New gift subscription (recipient) | Someone buys a gift subscription (sent to the recipient). |
| Gift subscription shipment | Each later shipment of a gift subscription (sent to the buyer). |
To turn an email off, switch it off in the Status column. The change saves at once.
To see an email as customers will, click Preview.
Note
Subrise doesn't send its own email for a skipped order or an expiring card. Use Shopify Flow or Klaviyo for those. Card update requests use Shopify's own secure email. See Update a payment method.
Turn off every customer email
To stop all customer emails at once, for example while you migrate from another app, turn off Customer emails under Settings > General > Shop-wide switches. See General settings.
Edit an email
- On the Customer emails tab, click the email's name.
- Edit the email (see below).
- Click Save.
To undo your changes, click Reset to default, then Save.
Simple mode
Simple mode is for changing words, not layout.
- Subject line: use
{{customer.name}}to put the customer's first name in the subject. - Sections: checkboxes that show or hide parts of the email, such as the product table.
- Text fields for each block of text in the email.
The Upcoming subscription order email also has When to send: from 1 to 14 days before billing.
Advanced mode
Advanced mode lets you edit the email's full HTML. Click Switch to advanced mode in the editor. Press Cmd or Ctrl + Space in the code editor to list the variables you can use.
Advanced mode is available on the Accelerate and Enterprise plans. On other plans the editor shows an upgrade button instead.
Tip
Editing HTML can break an email's layout. Preview the email after every change, and use Reset to default if something goes wrong.
Email design
The Email design tab sets the look of every customer email at once:
| Group | What you can change |
|---|---|
| Sender and brand | Your logo and the Email from address. |
| Font | The typeface. Choose a font from the list, or Other font and enter a Google Fonts name. |
| Font sizes | Text sizes in pixels for each kind of text. |
| Colors | Text, background and button colors. |
| Layout | Text alignment, padding and the shadow of the email body. |
| Portal button | The button that opens the customer portal. |
Click Save, then preview any email on the Customer emails tab to see the result. Reset to default restores the original design.
Send from your own domain
Until you verify a domain, customer emails come from info@subrise.app. To send from your own address, for example hello@yourstore.com:
- On the Email design tab, enter your address in Email from and click Save.
- Click Verify domain.
- Add the DNS records shown to your domain's DNS settings. Some DNS providers want the full record name, others want it without your domain, or
@for the root domain. - Click Verify.
DNS changes can take a while to show. The badge next to Email from changes from Domain not verified to Domain verified once it's done. Verifying your domain also helps your emails reach inboxes instead of spam folders.
Sending from your own domain is available on the Accelerate and Enterprise plans.
Email history
The Email history tab lists every email Subrise has sent to your customers, newest first, with the recipient, type, sender and time sent.
- Search by recipient email or message (type at least 3 characters).
- Filter with Dates: All time, Last day, Last week, Last month or Custom dates.
- Click the resend button on a row to send that email again.
The Activity tab on a subscription also lists the emails sent for it, and you can open each one to preview it.
Admin notifications
Admin notifications email you, or your team, when customers change their subscriptions. They start turned off.
- Go to the Admin notifications tab.
- In Send to, enter one or more addresses, separated by commas.
- Turn on Email me about every event, or pick the events you want:
- Subscription lifecycle: new subscription, paused, resumed, cancelled, and renewed (order placed).
- Subscription changes: add-on or product added, variant swapped, product removed, quantity updated, plan or frequency changed, shipping address updated.
- Billing and payments: billing skipped, billing date changed, billing failed, payment method updated.
- Gifts: gift subscription created.
- Click Save.
