Skip, pause and cancel
Reschedule or skip the next order, charge it now, pause now or after a few orders with automatic resume, resume, and cancel subscriptions.
This page covers the changes to a subscription's timing: moving or skipping the next order, charging it early, pausing, resuming and cancelling.
Each change sends the matching customer email, such as Subscription paused, if that email is turned on.
Reschedule the next order
- Open the subscription and go to the Upcoming orders tab.
- Click Reschedule.
- Choose the new Next billing date. It must be in the future.
- Leave Notify customer of the change ticked to send the Next order date changed email, or untick it.
- Click Reschedule.
Later orders follow the new date. For example, moving a monthly subscription from the 3rd to the 10th makes every later order fall on the 10th.
You can also change the next order date with Edit in the Plan card. See Edit the schedule by hand.
Skip the next order
- On the Upcoming orders tab, click Skip next order.
- Check the dates in the dialog: it shows the order that's skipped and the new next billing date.
- Click Skip order.
The next billing date moves on by one billing interval. A scheduled pause moves with it. The skipped order leaves Upcoming orders, and the Activity tab records the skip as Next order skipped.
Charge the next order now
Run billing now charges the customer for their next order right away, for example when they want it early.
- On the Upcoming orders tab, click Run billing now.
- Check the new next billing date in the dialog. It's one billing interval after today.
- Click Run billing now.
The charge shows on the Payment history tab once Shopify confirms it, usually within a few minutes. If it fails, Subrise handles it like any failed renewal. See Failed payments.
Run billing now is refused, with an error message, when:
- The subscription was already charged today, or a charge is still in progress. This includes a charge that failed today. It can be charged again tomorrow.
- Shopify says the subscription can't be billed: it isn't active in Shopify, or it has already had all of its billing cycles. In the second case Subrise marks it as expired instead of charging it.
Pause a subscription
Click Pause in the title bar. The Pause subscription dialog asks When should this subscription pause?
Pause now
Choose Pause now. No more orders are created until the subscription resumes.
To resume it on its own, enter a number in Automatically resume after this many billing cycles (optional). The next order moves out by that many cycles. Leave the field blank to stay paused until you or the customer resume it.
Click Pause now.
Pause after upcoming orders
A scheduled pause keeps the subscription billing for a few more orders, then pauses it. This suits customers who know they'll be away, or who want a set number of deliveries.
- Choose Pause after upcoming orders.
- In Pause after this many more orders, enter how many orders to bill before the pause.
- Optionally, enter Automatically resume after this many billing cycles.
- Check the dates under the fields, then click Save schedule.
The subscription page shows a Scheduled pause banner with the date of the last order before the pause, and the resume date if you set one. Skipping or rescheduling an order moves these dates too.
To change the schedule, click Edit schedule on the banner or Edit pause schedule in the title bar. To drop it, click Remove schedule.
Note
Prepaid and gift subscriptions can't have a scheduled pause. They pause straight away.
When a paused subscription resumes on its own
A subscription paused for a set number of cycles resumes a few days before its next billing date, 7 days by default. That gives the customer time to see their upcoming order. Change the number of days with Resume before the next billing date in Customer portal settings.
On the Subscriptions list, the Paused view shows Resumes with the date for these subscriptions, and Paused indefinitely for the rest.
Resume a subscription
Click Resume in the title bar of a paused or cancelled subscription. It's active again straight away.
If the next billing date has already passed, Subrise moves it to a few minutes from now. The customer is charged at your next scheduled billing run, not straight away. See When renewals are charged. Check the next billing date before you resume.
Cancel a subscription
- Click Cancel subscription in the title bar.
- Click Cancel subscription in the dialog to confirm, or Keep subscription to go back.
The customer isn't charged again and no more orders are created. Cancellations from the admin show as Cancelled from the admin in the cancellation reasons.
A cancelled subscription can be resumed later with Resume.
Warning
Subrise also cancels or pauses a subscription on its own after the last failed payment retry, depending on your billing settings.
