Launch checklist
The steps to take before you announce subscriptions, from your first plan to a test purchase.
Work through this list once before you announce subscriptions to your customers. Most steps take a few minutes.
1. Create a plan
A plan sets how often customers are charged and receive an order, and the discount they get. If you finished the setup wizard, you already have one.
Go to Plans and click Create plan. Start from a template, such as Monthly subscription, and adjust it. See Create a plan.
2. Add products to the plan
Customers can only subscribe to products that are on a plan.
Open the plan from Plans and use its Products section. Add products, single variants, or whole collections. You can also work from the Products page. See Add products to a plan.
3. Add the widget to your product page
The product widget shows the subscription options next to Add to cart.
In your theme editor, add the Subrise Product Page Widget block to your product template and save. Then open a product that's on a plan and check that the options show. See Add the product widget.
Tip
The widget only shows on products that are on a Subrise plan. If the theme editor shows a placeholder instead of the options, preview a product you added in step 2.
4. Set up the customer portal
Subscribers need a place to skip, pause and change their orders.
- In your theme editor, add the Subrise Customer Portal block to a page and save.
- In Subrise, go to Settings > Customer portal and set the portal location, so links in your emails send customers to the right place.
- Link to the portal from your store, for example in your header or account menu.
See Customer portal settings. To use Shopify customer accounts instead, see Shopify customer accounts.
5. Check your emails and billing settings
- Settings > Notifications: review the emails customers get. On the Email design tab, under Sender and brand, set Email from and verify its domain. Until the domain is verified, emails come from info@subrise.app. See Send from your own domain.
- Settings > Billing: check when renewals run and how failed payments are retried. See Billing and failed payments.
See Settings for the rest.
6. Test with a purchase
Buy a subscription yourself before customers do.
- Turn on test mode for your payment provider, such as Shopify Payments test mode.
- Open a product on your plan, choose a subscription option and check out.
- In Subrise, open Subscriptions and check that the new subscription is there with the right plan, price and next billing date.
- Open the customer portal as that customer and try a skip or a pause.
- Cancel the test subscription when you're done, and turn test mode off.
Warning
Turn test mode off before you launch. Real customers can't pay while it's on.
7. Choose your Subrise plan
Your free trial lasts 28 days. Pick a plan before it ends to keep using Subrise. See Choose a Subrise plan.
